Effect
Fruits contain a green fixed oil, saponin, tannins,
a resitious residue and three amorphous and hygroscopic
glycosidal compounds. A non-nitrogenous crystalline
substance isolated from the fruit pulp which is
identical with phyllembin (ethyl gailate) an active
principle isolated from Emiblica officinalis.
Action
Extract of the fruit shows a marked bile - stimulant
activity, and increases the total solid content in the
bile secreted in anaesthetised dogs but aqueous extract
has poor activity; 30 mg/kg alcoholic extract shows
increase in bile secretion; blood pressure and
respiration do not get affected. But a higher dose 60
mg/kg produces a fall in blood pressure and a dose of
100 mg/kg is fatal. The cold water extracts possess
antibacterial activity.
